It`s a changing of the guard. US wines sales has finally taken the lead as top import wine in BC, previously held by Australia. US wine imports have continued to grow strongly and currently US wine imports are seeing an increase of over 8% from last year.
Although Australian wine has been surpassed as top import country in BC, the trend may sway back in their favour as the category sees increasing potential growth in the US with the introduction of the hotly trending sweet wine varietals. Yellow tail, a leader in Australian wine exports, has seen immense growth from their sweet Moscato white wine in the US and this trend may help lead the Australian wine category back to the number one seat.
Despite challenges in the overall wine industry in BC, imported wines are showing steady growth. However, with the passing of Bill C-311, domestic wineries are given an opportunity to grow their sales by making it easier to sell and ship bottles inter-provincially to the rest of Canada. The bill leaves provincial governments with the power to decide the various details of inter-provincial wine importing & exporting such as the amount of wine allowed to be couriered.
